Sussex, New BrunswickPotash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PotashCorp) has announced $25,000 in funding for Romero House Soup Kitchen in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Stewart Brown, General Manager of PotashCorp’s New Brunswick Division, will present the organization with a cheque on Tuesday February 4 at 10:30 am at Romero House.

PotashCorp is steadfast in its mission to play a key role in the global food solution and strives to improve the well-being of the communities where it operates. Around the world many people still struggle to access adequate, nutritious food on a daily basis and the company is particularly committed to local food security organizations such as food banks and soup kitchens.

“The impact of this donation on the quality of life of local residents in emergency situations is significant,” said Brown. “In addition, the services and outreach programs that Romero House offers are closely aligned with our company’s community investment focus on a local level.”

The mission of Romero House is to lessen the stress of family crisis by providing food, clothing and a sense of security. In this way, individuals and families can focus on obtaining the housing, education and training necessary to rebuild their lives. Romero House is located in close proximity to PotashCorp's potash terminal facilities in Saint John.

“We are very grateful for PotashCorp's support in 2013 and again in 2014 for a total of $50,000,” said Carolyn McNulty, Executive Director of Romero House. “With this funding, and our active volunteer base, we can continue to truly make a difference for Saint John’s vulnerable residents.”

Romero House aims to serve one hot meal seven days a week to those in need in the city of Saint John and the surrounding area. Since opening in 1982, the organization has served more than 1,811,450 meals. Romero House currently provides between 200 and 400 meals a day and is open 365 days a year.

As the world’s largest crop nutrient company, PotashCorp plays an integral role in global food production. The company produces the three essential nutrients required to help farmers grow healthier, more abundant crops. With global populations rising and diets improving in developing countries, crop nutrients such as potash, nitrogen and phosphate offer a responsible and practical solution to help produce the food we need, from the land we have. In operation since 1983, the New Brunswick facility is one of our six potash mines in Canada.
