President Obama Calls for Increased Renewable Energy Use at Federal Facilities

On December 5, President Obama issued an executive order calling on the federal government to increase its target and nearly triple its use of renewable energy by 2020. Agencies will achieve the target by, where possible, taking the following actions:
- Installing agency-funded renewable energy onsite at federal facilities and retaining renewable energy certificates
- Contracting for energy that includes a renewable energy project onsite at a federal facility or offsite from a federal facility and retaining renewable energy certificates for the term of the contract
- Purchasing electricity and corresponding renewable energy certificates
- Purchasing renewable energy certificates.
