Assistant Secretary Nuland: The media are the people’s eyes and ears. You hold our governments accountable. You make sure that we are living up to our values, and you call us out when we are not. There’s no more potent reminder of that than what is going on here in Ukraine this week. More than three dozen journalists have been hurt in the violence here, many of them at the hands of the police. It is absolutely essential that all of us who stand for freedom, who stand for democracy, who stand for openness and transparency, also stand up for the rights of the journalists here in the OSCE space. I am absolutely delighted to be here with Dunja, I thank you for all that you do and the floor is yours.

Question: Ms. Nuland, are you going to visit the Maidan? Do you plan to do it?

Assistant Secretary Nuland: I have a full schedule here in Ukraine today, first with the OSCE, and then I’ll be meeting representatives of the government. I’ll be meeting representatives of the opposition, and representatives of civil society, so stay tuned.
