Campus adventures await Bruin families

Parents and their undergraduate daughters and sons will come together on campus Nov. 1-3 to spend three memorable days experiencing the best of UCLA as a family.

More than 4,000 parents and their children are expected to attend UCLA Parents’ Weekend 2013, an annual event that is now in its 12th year. They’ll be welcomed by Chancellor Gene Block and invited to attend dozens of events, presentations, meals, receptions and Office Hours sessions that will introduce attendees to all available campus resources that touch on every aspect of student life, from academic coursework to financial aid and career planning.

Families meet and mingle in the glow of Powell Library during a Parents' Weekend dinner last year. The special weekend has become one of the most important events taking place on campus annually.

To make this an unforgettable moment that parents can share with their children, many staff, faculty and students have been working to pull together a lively schedule packed with activities that will be family-friendly, festive and reflective of UCLA’s academic excellence. Family members will be able to lunch with the deans, attend presentations by stellar faculty, enjoy Homecoming activities as well as a football game at the Rose Bowl, and see campus cultural exhibitions and performances.

"Parents’ Weekend is one of the most memorable weekends of year," said Maisha Beasley, director of the Office of Parent and Family Programs. "It’s refreshing and energizing to watch families connect through academic presentations, engage in workshops that cover hot topics and learn about programs that are available to students on campus. Most importantly, it’s about enjoying being together on UCLA’s beautiful campus. We hope the entire community welcomes UCLA families to campus with open arms next week."

The annual Parents’ Weekend, which Chancellor Block has called one of the most important campus events of the year, strengthens parents’ connections to UCLA and fosters their advocacy for, support of and involvement in the campus community overall. It also enhances UCLA’s sense of community, organizers said.

UCLA Parents’ Weekend is free for current UCLA undergraduates, and fees for parents and family members remain the same as last year. On-site registration is available Friday, Nov. 1, for $90 per person ($50 for families of students who are members of the Academic Advancement Program), payable by credit card.
