Google Buys Entire Output of 240 MW Texas Wind Farm

Google recently expanded its commitment to renewable energy by agreeing to purchase the entire output of the 240 megawatt (MW) Happy Hereford wind farm near Amarillo, Texas. This is the fifth large-scale power purchase agreement Google has signed since 2010, and brings the company's total contracted wind power to 570 MW. The electricity generated by the new wind farm will be fed into the Southwest Power Pool, the same grid that serves Google's Mayes County, Oklahoma data center. Google will not be able to consume the electricity directly at the data center, but will sell the electricity to the wholesale market and retire the generated renewable energy certificates (RECs) against the company's carbon footprint. A small Native American-owned company, Chermac Energy, will be developing the wind farm.
