Statement by American Honda Regarding Engine Piston Recall: 2013 Honda Odyssey and Pilot

  • 270 Honda vehicles included in the U.S.
  • Engine short block will be replaced, free of charge
  • No related component failures, crashes or injuries have been reported

Honda will voluntarily recall 120 Odyssey vehicles and 150 Pilot vehicles from the 2013 model-year in the United States to replace the engine short block, free of charge. Engine pistons in these vehicles may not have been properly hardened during a heat treatment process. Pistons with lower hardness are more susceptible to premature durability-related wear. A damaged piston could cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Honda is not aware of any customer complaints, crashes or injuries related to this issue, which was discovered during engine assembly at the factory.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from American Honda. Mailed notification will be sent to customers during the week of Sept. 16, and at that time, owners of vehicles from the affected model years will be able to determine if their vehicles require repair by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009 and selecting option 4.
