Not a Feather, But a Dot is a 60-minute documentary that gives a light-hearted but informative perspective on the history, perceptions, and evolution of the South Asian community in the US.

The film begins by discussing the ubiquitous “red-dot” and the growth of Hinduism and most notably, the practice of yoga in the US. The film proceeds to analyze and deconstruct the various stereotypes surrounding the Indian community, and places them in the proper historical and social context.

It then looks at a sample of Indian-Americans that have broken traditional molds to challenge the stereotypes, and in doing so, establishes similarities with other immigrant communities that have undergone an analogous process.

The screening marks the first joint effort between Zing and Not a Feather, LLC. Manager of Local Programming, Kanika Chadda commented, “Best film since American Desi! This doc so wonderfully sheds light on our bi-cultural heritage. Zee TV’s youth network, Zing, has backed this film because we believe it’s about time we give 20-somethings a topic that they can relate to and laugh along with.” The film’s director Teju Prasad, adds, “After speaking with Kanika and others at Zing, I realized the network’s goal was, in many ways, in line with the goals of the film. I’m very thankful and excited for the collaboration.”

The screening is through the Tugg platform, requiring that tickets be reserved in advance by one week prior to the screening date. The screening will be confirmed when enough tickets have been reserved. The film has screened across the country using this platform, Prasad added, “We’re happy to screen through the audience-driven Tugg platform, because then we know each of these screenings has happened only because an audience wants it to.”

“Not a Feather, but a Dot” is Prasad’s second documentary film.
