Statement following technical discussions between the EU and Ecuador

On 9 July EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht met the newly appointed Ecuadorian Minister for Trade, Francisco Rivadeneira, who visited Brussels for consultations with the European Commission on the possibility of resuming negotiations for Ecuador participating in the multi-party Trade Agreement with Colombia and Peru. The Parties discussed and obtained clarifications on a number of points of interest and pending issues related to the agreement. On this basis both sides will now launch their internal consultations procedure on the way forward.
In 2006 the EU and the Andean countries (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) started the negotiations for an Association Agreement. The negotiations with Ecuador were discontinued in 2009. The EU concluded the multi-party Trade Agreement with Colombia and Peru in 2010. Subsequently there have been a number of technical discussions to explore the possibility of resuming the negotiations with the view of Ecuador participating in the Agreement. The visit of Minister Rivadeneira in Brussels took place in this context.
