LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, June 27, 2013 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The World Health Organization estimates around 1.1 billion people globally do not have access to improved water supply sources whereas 2.4 billion people lack access to any type of improved sanitation facility. About 2 million people die every year from diarrhoeal diseases; most of them are children less than 5 years of age; the most affected are the populations in developing countries, living in extreme conditions of poverty, normally peri-urban dwellers or rural inhabitants.

According to the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply and Sanitation (JMP), 37% per cent of the developing world’s population (2.5 billion people) lack improved sanitation facilities, and over 780 million people still use unsafe drinking water sources. Inadequate access to safe water and sanitation services, coupled with poor hygiene practices, kills and sickens thousands of children every day, and leads to impoverishment and diminished opportunities for thousands more.
