Marine News: Jeppesen and KVH Intend To Team Up To Provide Convenient, Affordable Chart Data Updates to Mariners around the World

Announcement at Nor-Shipping Unveils Weekly Distribution of Complete Jeppesen ENC Database and Jeppesen Professional+ Database Using KVH IP-MobileCast Service

ENGLEWOOD, COLO. | 04 Jun 2013 | By JEPPESEN

Jeppesen today announced that it intends to enter into a strategic relationship with maritime satellite communications leader KVH Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq: KVHI), through which updated versions of Jeppesens ENC and Professional+ charts will be delivered digitally to vessels around the world on a weekly basis. This innovative solution, which is expected to make the most up-to-date world portfolio of ENCs available on board, will be unveiled to the global shipping industry during the 2013 Nor-Shipping Conference, June 4-7 in Oslo, Norway.

Access to timely and hassle-free updates is key to compliance with the ECDIS mandate today and in the future, said Alex Zakroff, Jeppesen vice president/general manager, Marine. By utilizing the strengths of SENC distribution and removing many of the traditional barriers and cost-related issues regarding chart updates, we expect to help make electronic navigation safer and more efficient.

The launch of KVHs IP-MobileCast service is expected to provide an automatic, secure and cost-effective way to deliver the latest Jeppesen charting data to vessels through KVHs VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) antennas. It is anticipated that Jeppesen chart subscribers using KVH V-IP series VSAT antennas will be able to elect to have the full chart database update regularly delivered to the bridge. KVHs IP-MobileCast service utilizes the mini-VSAT Broadbandsm network to send large files to multiple ships with a single transmission, which is expected to reduce the cost, time and bandwidth required to get updated chart data into the hands of navigators worldwide.

This anticipated strategic relationship between Jeppesen and KVH is also expected to provide secure connections to a ships ECDIS to allow OEMs to monitor and update the ECDIS remotely.

KVH is proud to work with Jeppesen to improve operations on board a vessel by eliminating the need to wait for DVD shipments or lengthy download times, added Brent Bruun, executive vice president, Mobile Broadband Group. Not only do we expect to introduce the next generation of maritime navigation, but we also expect to help mariners improve and streamline how they manage their day-to-day operations.

The new IP-MobileCast service is expected to be available to support all of Jeppesens flexible chart licensing programs, including traditional direct licensing, cost-effective dynamic licensing, and OpenENC Pay-As-You-Sail (PAYS) service by the end of 2013, subject to ongoing cooperation and final agreement between the parties.
