ABA conference explores legal issues with America’s water supply

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 29, 2013 — More than 35 state and federal officials will headline the 31st Annual Water Law Conference hosted by the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy and Resources June 5-7 at the Red Rock Casino, Resort Spa in Las Vegas.

Patricia Mulroy, general manager of the Las Vegas Valley Water District and the Southern Nevada Water Authority, will give welcoming remarks at 9 a.m. June 6. Later that day, Robert J. Glennon, best-selling author of Unquenchable: America’s Water Crisis and What to Do About It, will give keynote remarks at a luncheon beginning at 12:45 p.m. John C. Cruden, president of the Environmental Law Institute and the immediate past deputy assistant attorney general of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division, will deliver a keynote address before the 5:15 p.m. reception.

Program highlights include:

“Water Law at International Borders: What Is the Law, and Where Is It Going?” — This program will address the legal issues and implications in water quality and quantity developments at the water systems shared by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

June 6, 9:30 – 10:45 a.m.

“Tribal Water Rights Settlements: Client Management Issues” — Panelists will examine problems in complex water settlements involving tribal rights.

June 6, 11 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

“Water and Wattage: Securing Water Supplies for New Energy Development Trends” — Panelists will explore legal issues and compliance strategies associated with trends to obtain and secure water supplies for energy development such as solar energy, shale gas exploration  and  hydropower.

June 7, 11 a.m. – noon
