ASCLA hosts tour of Cook County juvenile detention center and library at ALA Annual Conference

CHICAGO — Gain insight into the world of juvenile corrections and juvenile correctional librarianship by attending a tour of the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center and library at the 2013 ALA Annual Conference, co-hosted by the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA), a division of ALA, and Library Services for Youth in Custody (LSYC).

The tour will take participants to the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center and its library - one of the largest youth detention centers in the country. The center is operated by Nancy B. Jefferson Alternative School and is located on the west side of Chicago. The school and library are operated by Chicago Public Schools, and the library is staffed by a full-time, certified school library media specialist. Megan Cusick, Nancy B. Jefferson school librarian, and Camden Tadhg, logistics team chair of LSYC, will lead the tour. Participation is open to all ALA Annual Conference conference registrants.

The tour will take place from 8:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Monday, July 1. Transportation will be provided, and participants are asked to pay what they can to cover transportation costs, with a recommended contribution of $20.
