500-kW Community Solar Project Underway in Aurora, Colorado
Clean Energy Collective has broken ground on Aurora, Colorado's first community-owned solar project. The 500 kilowatt (kW) project allows Xcel Energy customers to purchase and receive the benefits of solar panels without having to install solar on their homes. Clean Energy Collective recently began construction on a similar project in Boulder, CO.
The project was made possible through the EPA's RE-Powering America's Land Initiative, which encourages the development of renewable energy projects on contaminated land; the Aurora installation is located on property above contaminated ground water from the Buckley Air Force Base. Through the EPA's initiative, vacated or underutilized properties are transformed into community resources which drive environmental, economic and social benefits. Recently, the initiative was recognized as one of the Top 25 Innovations in American Government, according to Harvard University's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation.
