Join the celebration of quality children’s and young adult literature at the 2013 Coretta Scott King Book Awards Breakfast

CHICAGO — The Ethnic and Multicultural Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) and the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee will celebrate the best in children’s and young adult literature representing the African-American experience at the 2013 Coretta Scott King Book Awards Breakfast from 7 – 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 30 in the Radisson Blu Atlantic Ballroom during ALA’s 2013 Annual Conference in Chicago.
This year’s celebration will honor Coretta Scott King Author Award winner and Illustrator honor book recipient Andrea Davis Pinkney, author and illustrator of “Hand in Hand: Ten Black Men Who Changed America”(Disney/Jump at the Sun Books, 2012) and Illustrator Award winner Bryan Collier, illustrator of “I, Too, Am America” (Simon Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2012).
The 2013 Coretta Scott King Book Awards Honor recipients will also be recognized, including Jacqueline Woodson, author of “Each Kindness,” illustrated by E. B. Lewis (Nancy Paulsen Books, 2012); Vaunda Micheaux Nelson, author of “No Crystal Stair: A Documentary Novel of the Life and Work of Lewis Micheaux, Harlem Bookseller,” illustrated by R. Gregory Christie (Carolrhoda Lab, 2012); Daniel Minter, illustrator of “Ellen’s Broom,” written by Kelly Starling Lyons (G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 2012); Christopher Myers, illustrator and author of “H. O. R. S. E.,” (Egmont USA, 2012); and Kadir Nelson, illustrator of” I Have a Dream: Martin Luther King, Jr.,” written by Martin Luther King, Jr. (Schwartz Wade Books, 2012).
Also honored will be Demetria Tucker, youth services coordinator within the Roanoke (Va.) Public Library System, library media specialist at the Forest Park Elementary School and recipient of the 2013 Coretta Scott King- Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement (Practitioner). Tucker was selected 2007 Teacher of the Year at Forest Park Elementary. As family and youth services librarian for the Pearl Bailey Library, a branch of the Newport News (Va.) Public Library System, Tucker now coordinates a youth leadership program, a teen urban literature club and many other programs that support the youth of her community.

The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are presented annually by the Coretta Scott King Book Awards Committee of the ALA’s Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT) to African-American authors and illustrators to encourage the artistic expression of the African-American experience via literature and the graphic arts.
