Democracy, Human Rights, Refugees: Acting Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor To Travel to the Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Democracies
Acting Assistant Secretary Uzra Zeya will represent the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the Community of Democracies in Mongolia, April 27to 30. The delegation, led by Deputy Secretary Burns, includes discussions about pressing themes such as women in democracy and the importance of Internet freedom and a free press.
Acting Assistant Secretary Zeya will hold high-level bilateral meetings with ministerial counterparts and civil society activists. She will also articulate the lessons learned and challenges two years after the Arab Spring with representatives from Yemen, the Czech Republic and Egypt.
Acting Assistant Secretary Zeya will also accept the Palmer Award on behalf of the family of the late U.S. Ambassador, Chris Stevens. Her participation will culminate with an open dialogue with the Asia Democracy Network to discuss the difficulties of operating in difficult, restrictive environments.
