Finalists Announced for UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards 2013
Oil & Gas UK and Step Change in Safety have announced the finalists for the 2013 UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards.
Sponsored by Maersk Oil, this lunchtime event at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 24 April will acknowledge significant contributions to safety by individuals and companies within the industry.
Seven awards will be presented on the day, covering the categories of Safety Leadership, Safety Representative of the Year, Preventative Safety Action, Most Promising Individual and Innovation in Safety (company award).
A brand new prize has been created this year, with the first ever Award for Workforce Engagement going to a company or work site which has engaged its staff to improve its safety culture.
In addition, the Ideas in Safety prize – created to recognise the workforce’s original ideas to help reduce hydrocarbon releases – returns for its second year with a cheque for £5,000 presented to the winner.
Finalists for the awards are:
Safety Leadership – for an inspirational leader who motivates and engages their team to work safely:
- Shona Campbell, subsea project manager for Gryphon Area Reinstatement Project, Maersk Oil UK
- Elaine Hume, occupational health & safety coordinator, Marathon Oil U.K. LLC
- Kent Lanier, rig manager, Rowan Drilling UK
Safety Representative of the Year – for an enthusiastic and committed safety rep who is driving the safety agenda at their worksite:
- Nicky Elphinstone, steward, Aramark
- Keith Hay, plant operator / supervisor, Champion Technologies
- Ian Murray, responsible electrical person (Ninian Northern), Petrofac / CNR International
Preventative Safety Action – for a sharp, quick-thinking individual who has challenged a situation and successfully intervened to prevent a potential incident:
- Tony Bull, captain, CHC Helicopters
- Les Morrison, manufacturing analyst, Champion Technologies
- Scott McDonald, offshore electrician, Archer
Most Promising Individual – for an up-and-coming person with potential, who has shown great enthusiasm for offshore safety, actively embracing safety culture:
- Marc Brankin, scaffold chargehand (MindSafety coach), Brent Decommissioning Project (Shell / Wood Group PSN / Stork Technical Services)
- Nick Hearn, graduate mechanical engineer, Nexen Petroleum UK Ltd
- Carla McLeod, intelligent safety lead, TAQA Bratani Limited
Innovation in Safety (Company Award) – for a company which has put in place a clever process or technique to improve safety either across an organisation or at an individual worksite:
- Stork Technical Services (RBG) Limited – Scaffolding inertia reel anchor
- Stork Technical Services (RBG) Limited – City & Guilds Qualification in Temporary Refuge Testing
- WEB Rigging Services Ltd – WEB Deck system
Workforce Engagement – which recognises the active embracement of worker engagement on safety matters:
- Derek Allan, project manager, Brent Delta Decommissioning, Shell UK Limited
- Cosalt Offshore (UK) Limited, Onshore Facility
- Global Producer 3 – Floating Production Storage Offloading (FPSO) vessel, Maersk Oil UK
Ideas in Safety Prize – which recognises the resourcefulness and creativity of individuals or teams working offshore who have an idea to reduce hydrocarbon releases:
- Engineering Services team and the plant turnaround (TAR) team, BP International Ltd
- No Leaks Team ‘No Leak Is Acceptable’ campaign, Expro
- Control of Work Team, Petrofac
Oil & Gas UK’s health and safety director Robert Paterson said: “Once again, I’m pleased to say we’ve seen a very high calibre of entries to the UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards. I’d like to congratulate all the finalists and wish them all the very best of luck on the day.”
Step Change in Safety team leader Les Linklater said: “It’s tremendously encouraging to see such quality entries. Safety is ingrained in the fabric of this major hazard industry and it’s fitting to have a platform where the top safety achievers can be held in high regard.”
