THE IBERDROLA GROUP REINFORCES ITS COMMITMENT TO PEOPLE
Iberdrola maintains its firm commitment to its people as a core value and the key to its success, based on a social model aimed at promoting professional excellence and the quality of life of employees.
Quality and ongoing training is one of the strategic pillars of the Iberdrola Group’s Human Resources policy. The ultimate aim of training is to develop the abilities of its professionals in order to achieve a qualitative and quantitative improvement of their contribution to the organisation, whilst supporting the personal development of its team.
Thanks to this commitment, in 2012 the Company offered over one million hours of training, for the fifth year in a row. In addition, last year the Group increased the number of courses offered by 53%, reaching 82% of its workforce worldwide, with more than 44 hours of training per professional on average. Last year alone, the Company organised 37.486 modules, which were attended by nearly 162,000 employees.
By subject matters, technical training exceeded 57% of the total, since this is the area that has a more direct application to the daily activity of the Group. Training in health and safety came second, amounting to 20% of the total, compared to 17.25% the previous year. Lastly, 8% of the total hours was devoted to language training, as a response to the Group´s multicultural reality.
An important training and education effort which the Company will continue to promote in the coming years is one of the factors that has turned the Iberdrola Group into a benchmark employer.
In Brazil, its subsidiary Elektro has been chosen the country’s best company to work for, according to the ranking prepared by Você S/A among more than 500 organisations. According to this ranking, which is based on the results of a survey conducted by Fundación Instituto de Administración, Elektro obtained 92.5 points of employee satisfaction.
Iberdrola also tops these indices in Spain. In 2012, it became the best Spanish company to work for in its workforce category (between 5,000 and 14,999 employees) and was once again the preferred company in its sector, according to the Merco Personas 2012 survey. The Company, which has been listed on this ranking since its creation, has been one of the top ten companies since 2008.
This relevant Corporate Reputation Business Monitor, which analyses the work environment, internal reputation and the employer brand, has pointed out that the most important factors for choosing a company to work for are ethical and professional values, motivation, pride of belonging and professional development. In 2012, more than 2,000 employees were promoted within the Iberdrola Group.
In addition to the importance given to training, the most highly rated measures implemented by Iberdrola include flexible working hours, the implementation of the continuous working day, the pioneering policy regulating wage increases not linked to the RPI, but to EBIT –according to Bank of Spain and Euro Pact recommendations– and the commitment to work-life balance.
In this regard, Iberdrola has a Work-Life Balance and Equal Opportunities Policy which includes more than 70 practices, including 15 calendar day paid leave before childbirth, 5-hour working days, with no salary reduction, until the child’s first birthday, or the two-year extension of the age set by legislation in cases of reduced working hours for legal guardianship, among others. Last year, more than 3,900 employees benefited from some type of paid leave to harmonize their professional and family life.
In order to support our professionals in particularly difficult situations, the Company implemented the Family Plan, aimed at immediate family members of its staff with a certified level of disability of 33% or over. This programme, which is already benefiting the families of more than 80 employees, seeks to contribute to their social and labour market integration through the design of a support plan tailored to each case, based on its characteristics.
This set of measures has resulted in a number of recognitions, including Iberdrola’s certification as a Family-Friendly Company, awarded for the first time in May 2006, thus becoming the first utility included in this ranking. The Company has renewed this certification three times in a row, improving its score to category B+ Proactive Company.
All these benefits are part of the Iberdrola Group’s policy aimed at developing a favourable labour relations framework based on equal opportunities, non-discrimination and respect for diversity.
