Don’t Miss the Extended Deadline to Enter UK Offshore Safety Awards

Step Change in Safety and Oil & Gas UK have extended the deadline for entering nominations to the UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards to 5pm on Friday 8 March in response to requests from a number of potential entrants.

This year’s awards ceremony, principally sponsored by Maersk Oil, will be held on 24 April at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre and will see Grahame Smith of the Scottish Trades Union Congress give the keynote speech and present the winners with their awards.

Alongside the regular categories, a new prize category has been added for 2013 to honour workforce engagement and will be awarded to a worksite or installation which has actively embraced the concept of better engagement with its staff. The Ideas in Safety prize also returns with a cash prize of £5,000 for an individual or team which has come up with an original idea to prevent hydrocarbon gas leaks.

Oil & Gas UK’s health and safety director, Robert Paterson, said: “There are so many great ideas to improve safety being put into practice by the UK offshore workforce. This really is a fantastic opportunity to not only reward these ideas but to celebrate and share them. I’m pleased to say we’ll be extending the deadline for nominations and would urge anyone thinking of putting in a late entry to do so as soon as possible.”

Step Change in Safety’s Les Linklater added: “We’re searching for the top safety representatives, safety leaders and the bright, up and coming people who could be the safety leaders of the future. We’re also looking for the quick thinkers who have intervened to help prevent an incident and the companies leading the way in safety innovation.

“Offshore safety has improved so much over the last 15 years and these awards are all about showcasing the really positive things that are going on. It doesn’t matter what job you do or whether you’re a leader, safety rep or trainee. If you’re playing your part to keep safety at the top of the agenda I’d urge you to get your entry in before the deadline of 8 March.”
