Aberdeen Foyer Gains Winnings from Environmental Award
An Aberdeen charity that supports homeless young people in the North East of Scotland is to receive the £5,000 prize money originally earmarked for one of the categories in last nights Scottish Offshore Achievement Awards, it was announced today by UKOOA.
The prize money is being donated to the Aberdeen Foyer, a successful local charitable organisation which offers a range of services and opportunities to help disadvantaged young people rebuild their lives.
It follows the decision by judges who, after much consideration, decided not to present a prize in the Environmental Performance category in the awards this year, as no entry was felt to have met the required standards.
James May, director general of UKOOA, sponsors of the environmental award, said: "We were disappointed that no submission for the category fully met the judges stringent criteria as we know that there is a lot of very good environmental work being done by the offshore industry. We will therefore continue to sponsor the award and plan to work with the organisers to encourage a good crop of quality entries for next year."
Aberdeen Foyer will use the donation to fund three environmental projects involving young people in the local community.
"The donation will allow us to bring forward a number of projects with an environmental theme, which is very appropriate", said Edel Tuckwood, Aberdeen Foyers assistant director.
"Some of the funds will go towards landscaping the courtyard at the Foyers main accommodation site in Crown Street, Aberdeen to create an outside recreational area for our tenants", she continued. "Other money will be used to sponsor various community and voluntary projects through the Princes Trust Volunteers Programme. And we will now also be able to buy the tools, materials and the professional services we need to develop our recently acquired allotment in Garthdee where young people can grow their own produce."
