Oil & Gas UK responds to HSE's offshore safety statistics bulletin 2007/8

In response to the HSE's offshore safety statistics bulletin 2007/8, Chris Allen, Oil & Gas UK's HSSE director, said:
"We are encouraged that the improvement in the major injury rate achieved in 2006/7 has been maintained; this year's figures are the second lowest since 1997/98 reflecting an improvement of over 50%. 2007/8 also saw a new low in the rate of over three day injuries.
"Nevertheless there is absolutely no complacency within the industry, particularly in relation to asset integrity where we continue to invest more than £1 billion per year to maintain the safety of our installations.
"Although there was no decrease in the number of major and significant hydrocarbon releases in 2007/8, we know that the majority of installations now operate from year to year without an incident of this kind. Indeed, since 1994/5, the number of major releases has been reduced by 75% and the number of significant releases by 50%.
"In striving to further reduce its hydrocarbon releases, the industry will be seeking close engagement with technical staff at HSE to further analyse the releases that have occurred and identify where action should be targeted.
"Whilst the offshore safety statistics already compare very favourably with many other industry sectors, including retail, transport and manufacturing, the industry will continue to work through Step Change to ensure that the offshore industry has a long, sustainable future, free from major accidents.
