Improved emergency response guidelines to be launched at Oil & Gas UK Training Session
Oil & Gas UK will launch its newly revised emergency response guidelines at a special training session for industry professionals to be held at OPITO – The Oil & Gas Academy in Aberdeen on 17 March.
The half-day event is being organised to highlight changes in the new 2010 version of the Competence and Training in Emergency Response Guidelines. The amended document outlines best practice in the offshore oil and gas industry for dealing effectively with emergency situations and recommends the training required to develop, demonstrate and maintain the competence of emergency responders. Participants in the training session are expected to include those who have a responsibility for identifying and managing offshore emergency response roles and plans, onshore staff who have a responsibility for arranging training courses, as well as training providers and industry regulators. It will also be of value to representatives of the offshore workforce who have a key role in offshore emergency response.
Bob Kyle, Oil & Gas UK’s safety consultant, is one of five speakers at the event. He said: “Effective management of competence and training in emergency response for offshore installations is a fundamental requirement for all offshore operators. The demonstration of this is a regulatory requirement and a key feature of the offshore safety case. How an individual responds to an emergency situation can have a major impact on whether a situation is dealt with effectively and in a way that protects the safety of all involved.”
Jim Cameron, standards and approvals director for OPITO – The Oil & Gas Academy and who is also speaking at the event, said: “The guidelines update the previous version published by UKOOA in 2004. As well as learning about industry standards for competence and training in emergency response, delegates will also find out about OPITO’s role in maintaining fit-for-purpose standards and the important elements to consider when implementing these guidelines in the workplace.”
