First Vegan Sunflower Standard School

Beechen Cliff School in Bath have become the first school to join the respected Vegan 'Sunflower Standard' scheme. Second Chef at the secondary school, Enzo Russo, has created a varied, nutritious vegan menu which is also delicious. Featured vegan dishes for staff and students to enjoy include moussaka, leek and potato pie - and even, 'vegan steak'.

Enzo Russo first heard about the Sunflower Trademark through his wife, when she asked the Vegan Society for expert advice on vegan recipe development. VS Education Officer, Rob Jackson invited them to tap into the growing demand for plant-based catering through the Sunflower Standard - and the rest is history.

Enzo Russo said, "I'm looking forward to cooking more vegan food for the children, it's a great way to make our canteen more animal-friendly, and inclusive. I'm sure everyone will find it tasty and interesting - and also, educational, helping us think about how animals are treated, too."

Head of Business Development at The Vegan Society, George Gill, said today, "The Vegan Society are delighted to welcome Beechen Cliff School as partners - the first School to qualify for our popular Vegan Sunflower Standard scheme for caterers. ..."

Beau Rouse, a Sixth Form student and keen sportsman, said, "It is great that being a vegan is promoted in a positive and healthy way."

Headmaster, Andrew Davies, said, "This has ‘opened students eyes’ and helped eliminate the prejudices and preconceptions which sometimes exist."

Good vegan food is a great for caterers - tasty, healthy, ethical and planet-friendly, it appeals to just about everyone. Vegans enjoy foods made from every kind of fruit, vegetable, grain, bean, nut, herb, plant-based spice, and mushrooms too - from casseroles to chocolate cake. Delicious plant-based options can attract 'ethical eaters', vegetarians and many following religious diets, as well as vegans themselves. Just a few changes to existing recipes can make vegan food available - with the chance to cut costs, and cut your catering carbon footprint too.
