St. Petersburg, Fla. – A former NBA referee who was imprisoned following a betting scandal has won a lawsuit against the publisher of his memoir. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), a Florida jury awarded Tim Donaghy $1.3 million in a case against Shawna Vercher and her now-defunct company, VTi Group.
Donaghy, who was released from prison in 2009 after pleading guilty to charges stemming from bets made on games he officiated, filed the lawsuit for breach of contract, claiming he was not paid for a memoir published in 2010.
Donaghy is quoted by the AP as stating following the verdict, “My four daughters are thrilled that the truth surrounding the disappearance of the profits of my book Personal Foul is officially on record… It was a long wait, but it feels terrific knowing that we prevailed and we are moving forward with the truth on our side.”
