Texas Voluntary Market Grows 29%, Totals 15.3 Million MWh in 2011

In 2011, voluntary renewable energy certificate (REC) retirements in Texas surpassed mandatory retirements under the state's Renewable Portfolio Standard for the fourth consecutive year. According to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), voluntary retirements totaled 15,288,819 megawatt-hours (MWh) in 2011 while mandatory retirements equaled 9,031,949 MWh. The Texas voluntary REC market grew by 29% in 2011, and grew by 45% in 2010 over 2009's record of 8.94 million MWh of voluntary REC retirements.
