The Anchorage Daily News reported in its article, "Wind power saves Kodiak 1 million gallons of diesel," that since Alaska's Pillar Mountain Wind Project came online in August 2009, it has saved Kodiak Electric Association (KEA) one million gallons of diesel fuel, reducing consumption by about half. Kodiak Electric Association received the Wind Cooperative of the Year Award in February 2010 from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association and DOE's Wind Powering America project for its outstanding commitment to developing the state's first utility-scale wind farm. In addition, Intrafish Media recently reported that Island Seafoods has partnered with KEA to use 100% wind energy to power its salmon production plant in Kodiak. KEA provides renewable energy credits to Island Seafoods. Wind Powering America has provided wind-diesel technical assistance and stakeholder education and outreach to rural electric cooperatives in Alaska for many years.
