The varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a herpes virus, which causes both chickenpox and shingles. The virus is also called herpes zoster. A study found that people with asthma have a higher risk of developing shingles. “Researchers found that patients … exhibited higher risks of herpes zoster after adjusting for age, gender, atopic status and a history of varicella vaccine.” (2) Other studies provide more evidence. The CBCD points out that a reactivation of the varicella zoster virus happens whenever immunity to VZV declines as a result of aging or immunosuppression (a damaged immune system). Asthma is the result of an overreaction of the immune system, wherein the body attacks its own airways. When the immune system is damaged or attacks the body it is supposed to protect, a latent virus, such as VZV, can increase in number, causing shingles.

The CDC notes that “Nearly 1 out of every 3 people in the United States will develop shingles in their lifetime. Anyone who has had chickenpox or received chickenpox vaccine in the past may develop shingles.” (3)

The CBCD recommends that people who have had chickenpox in the past take Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin. The formula of these natural antiviral products was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines.
