Vancouver Scanning Company Partnered With the Royal BC Museum to Digitize Their Collection of Colonial Correspondence

For example, more than 150 years ago, former Sergeant Wilmer from the Victoria Police Department wrote a letter to Vancouver Island Governor A. E. Kennedy. Wilmer addressed the subject of corruption on the force, alleging that the Police Superintendent was accepting bribes and encouraging officers to turn a blind eye to illegal gambling in the area.

This letter, and over 90,000 pages like it, is the paper correspondence of the Government of Vancouver Island (1849-1866), the Government of the Colony of British Columbia (1858-1871) and united Colony of British Columbia (1866-1871).

The collection contains thousands of letters and reports addressed to a wide variety of government officials over this time period.

Thanks to the hard work of the team at Micro Com Systems, who digitized the documents from microfilm negatives, the epistolary history of the province is now accessible to anyone on the internet.
