Vancouver Scanning Company Puts 90,000 Pages of Historic Correspondence Online

Vancouver Scanning Company Partnered With the Royal BC Museum to Digitize Their Collection of Colonial Correspondence

/EINPresswire.com/ -- VANCOUVER, BC--(Marketwired - June 07, 2016) -  Micro Com Systems, a Vancouver scanning company, recently concluded a historically significant job for the Royal BC Museum. The locally based business, which specializes in document digitization, image scanning, and data capture, worked with museum staff to help preserve early provincial history by digitizing over 90,000 pages of colonial correspondence. To learn more about their process, go to: http://www.microcomsys.com/solutions/document-scanning/microfilm/

"The Colonial Correspondence series is the largest collection of textual records we have ever placed online," says Royal BC Museum CEO Prof. Jack Lohman. "The correspondence is a significant treasure trove of accessible information for historians, researchers and scholars -- in fact, anyone who is curious about the colonial history of British Columbia."

For example, more than 150 years ago, former Sergeant Wilmer from the Victoria Police Department wrote a letter to Vancouver Island Governor A. E. Kennedy. Wilmer addressed the subject of corruption on the force, alleging that the Police Superintendent was accepting bribes and encouraging officers to turn a blind eye to illegal gambling in the area.

This letter, and over 90,000 pages like it, is the paper correspondence of the Government of Vancouver Island (1849-1866), the Government of the Colony of British Columbia (1858-1871) and united Colony of British Columbia (1866-1871).

The collection contains thousands of letters and reports addressed to a wide variety of government officials over this time period.

Thanks to the hard work of the team at Micro Com Systems, who digitized the documents from microfilm negatives, the epistolary history of the province is now accessible to anyone on the internet.

The Colonial Correspondence series is a record of the human history and natural history of BC, advancing our understanding and knowledge of the province.
