Depression Increases the Risk of Shingles; The CBCD Reviews the Medical Evidence

“Depression negatively affects immune function and leads to increased susceptibility to infection, including herpes zoster.” (1)

Patients diagnosed with depression are at an elevated risk of physical illness.

Ever had chickenpox? The CBCD recommends Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR against the latent varicella zoster virus, which can cause chickenpox and shingles.

A study found that individuals diagnosed with clinical depression have a higher risk of developing herpes zoster (also called shingles). The varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a herpes virus that normally causes chickenpox in childhood. The virus may re-activate to cause shingles in later life. In the study, Dr. Liao and colleagues wrote that “Patients diagnosed with depression are at an elevated risk of physical illness … (and) … increased susceptibility to infection, including herpes zoster.” (1) This risk increases with age. As the researchers noted, “patients diagnosed with depression are at an elevated risk of herpes zoster, particularly those aged 45 to 54 years and those with comorbidities, including renal diseases, hyperlipidemia, malignant conditions, rheumatic diseases, hypertension, anxiety, and sleep disorder.” (1)

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends that individuals who are depressed, or who are above the age of 45 years, take Gene-Eden-VIR or Novirin against the latent varicella zoster virus. The formula of these natural antivirals was designed to help the immune system target latent viruses, and was shown to reduce symptoms associated with herpes viruses in two separate post-marketing clinical studies.

The formula of these natural antiviral products was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The studies showed that the Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin formula is effective against herpes viruses. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs. Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with (herpes viruses) … reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (2) The study authors also wrote that, “we observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (2)

Both products can be ordered online on the Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR websites here:

Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinesis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. The first ingredient is a trace element, and the other four are plant extracts. Each ingredient and its dose was chosen through a scientific approach. Scientists at polyDNA, the company that invented and patented the formula, scanned thousands of scientific and medical papers published in various medical and scientific journals, and identified the safest and most effective natural ingredients against latent viruses. To date, Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR are the only natural antiviral products on the market with published clinical studies that support their claims.

Note: Novirin has the same formula as Gene-Eden-VIR. However, it contains higher quality and more expensive ingredients.

It should be noted that WebMD says that “New research shows clinical depression, even in its mildest form, takes a toll on the immune system. It gives a foothold to serious health problems.” (3) The varicella zoster virus can take advantage of this drop in immunity, causing shingles. The CDC notes that when a person develops shingles, he or she can experience “a painful rash that develops on one side of the face or body. The rash forms blisters that typically scab over in 7 to 10 days and clears up within 2 to 4 weeks.

Before the rash develops, people often have pain, itching, or tingling in the area where the rash will develop. This may happen anywhere from 1 to 5 days before the rash appears.” (4)

Are there treatments currently on the market, which target the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV)?

Yes there are.

Antiviral drugs, such as Zovirax or Valtrex are designed to fight the shingles virus. However, these medications, when effective, only work to shorten the time of the shingles outbreak. They are ineffective against the latent VZV virus. (5)

The CBCD reminds the public that Gene-Eden-VIR and Novirin are not a cure for conditions caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus. However, their formula was designed to help the immune system target the latent shingles virus.
