Worldwide M2M/IoT Business to Business Infrastructure Taking Off

IoT continues to pervade the industry, but the potential for new services and OTT competition are forcing providers to virtualize their infrastructures.

Service providers and vendors are struggling to understand how to map the IoT TAM dollars to real use cases, optimal technology approaches and profitable business models.

GILBERT, ARIZONA, USA, December 16, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The total addressable market for machine to machine/Internet of things and business partner IoE is estimated at $19 trillion in 2022. These technologies promise to deliver benefits in multiple areas: increasing energy efficiency, improving operational efficiency with smarter services, reducing supply chain friction, enabling real-time delivery of marketing messages and actionable analytics. “Although there is little disagreement that M2M/IoT will be transformative, it is so early in the life cycle that service providers and vendors are struggling to understand how to map the TAM dollars to real use cases, optimal technology approaches and profitable business models,” states Dennis Ward, principal analyst, IoT at ACG Research.

Although M2M/IoT is not technically a new segment, examples of early M2M/IoT include SCADA, industrial automation, airline engine management and telecom network management, but interest is surging because the confluence of cost, form factor, and pervasive connectivity is enabling new applications, such as wearables, and services that were not possible to deliver just a few years ago.

Nevertheless, ACG see this transformation occurring in two phases. “In Phase I, service providers are transforming their networks infrastructures from monolithic to hybrid virtualized architectures to maximize management, orchestration and agility,” says Dennis Ward. “In Phase II, providers will naturally focus on monetizing these networks. These phases are not necessarily evolving sequentially.”

ACG’s report focuses on answering the following:

• IoT market size and forecasts from 2013- 18
• Major verticals driving the industry
• Projected IoT market opportunity, particularly for wireless service providers
• SPs’opex investments for their infrastructure transformations
• Key IoT platform solutions selling into the service provider networks
• Equipment and SPs addressing protection, security, privacy, and safety of a users’ assets for enterprise companies
• Common service entities that are making the most impact in the IoT infrastructures
• Key use cases that will bring service providers the most value from their infrastructure investments/ecosystems
• Global adoption trends and future growth potential within IoT ecosystems across different regions
• Looming issues for the IoT market and how will service and equipment providers survive
