Security & Defense: EMS Technologies Wins Navy Contract
June 29, 2010 (FinancialWire) — EMS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELMG) said that Raytheon Missile Systems (NYSE: RTN) has awarded EMS’s Defense & Space division a follow-on volume production award to provide radar front-end switch assemblies for the Phalanx Close-in Weapon System.
The Phalanx is a rapid-fire, radar-guided gun system designed to defeat missile attacks and other close-in air threats by tracking multiple targets simultaneously.
According to EMS, the current production order, valued at $5.4 million is part of a multi-year Basic Ordering Agreement. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in February 2011 and continue through 2013.
EMS, which serves both the radar and communications-on-the-move military markets, was selected by Raytheon to produce and repair all sustaining Phalanx high-power switches.
The company provides a critical component of the Phalanx CIWS’s tracking radar. When targets are determined to threaten the area protected by the system, EMS’s switches enable the radar to detect and track threats early in flight.
Since the U.S. Navy began fully-fitting ships with the Phalanx CIWS system in 1980, EMS D&S has supplied switches for 650 of the 900 systems that have been deployed by the program. The system currently operates on all U.S. warships and more than 256 foreign ships.
Georgia-based EMS Technologies is a provider of wireless connectivity solutions over satellite and terrestrial networks. EMS Defense & Space, a division of EMS Technologies, is a supplier of antenna systems and beam management for a range of military and commercial applications, including mobile network-centric operations, radar for battlefield visibility and commercial aero connectivity.
