Overwhelmed by disasters, faith groups march on
Call out for volunteers to help in the aftermath of disasters that stroke the east and west coasts.
Described by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the National Interagency Fire Center as the most destructive on record, the 2018 wildfire season has so far caused 3 billion dollars worth of damages and people are asking desperately for help.
Touring any one of the disasters this fall including Hurricane Florence on the east coast, Hurricane Michael in the Gulf and currently the Camp Fire fires in Northern California, you will find many disaster response and relief organizations working side by side including the Southern Baptist Disaster Response, Team Rubicon, Salvation Army, United Methodist Committee on Relief, Churches of Scientology Disaster Response, Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, Islamic Relief USA and others. All are members of the National VOAD.
Joava Good, Deputy National Director of Churches of Scientology Disaster Response (CSDR) has spent several months volunteering at these sites. “Helping those in need is always rewarding. There have been some who have come to ‘the end of their rope’ and upon seeing the yellow shirts of our Volunteer Ministers have called them ‘sunshine bringing hope for the future’. The disaster teams embrace all in need no matter their faith tradition,” she said.
Highlighting the extent of the devastation, Ms. Good further said, “In Florida so many have lost just about everything. Even Churches have been destroyed. The California fires have ravaged whole communities. Fire fighters working daily hour after hour are given new energy by the disaster groups’ emotional and spiritual care. We are honored to work side by side with so many other faith groups.”
The rallying cry across the country is, “We need more volunteers!” There is so much to be done and so many people to help. Ms. Good encouraged others, “Please go to the National VOAD website (www.nvoad.org) and select your charity or group of choice and donate or volunteer.”
The Church of Scientology Volunteer Minister program is a religious social service created in the mid-1970s by L. Ron Hubbard. Anyone of any culture or creed may train as a Volunteer Minister and use these tools to help their families and communities. The Church provides free online training2 at www.volunteerministers.org
