Angola urges African Union to meet people's expectations
The diplomat said so Thursday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the head of the Angolan delegation to 20th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU).
He said that the African Union Reform is crucial, stressing that it is of the view of all members that the organisation can not remain as it is.
The official said that Angola supports the reform under SADC, but the country defends greater clarification.
He cited the example of the issue of the continental agenda for youth, according to a note from the Permanent Representation of Angola to the AU.
Prior to start the works on Wednesday the Angolan delegation took part in a meeting to coordinate positions of the SADC minister.
Namibia was appointed spokesperson for the Council, in its capacity as the president of the southern Africa region.
The Secretary of State said that the event ending Thursday is dealing with aspects of reform which do not require a revision of the AU Constitutional Act.
Among them, he said, stress goes to the Commission Reform, which entails reduction from ten to eight members, a proposal that seems to gather consensus from the delegations.
Angola is attending the 20th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), kicked off at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Wednesday.
The two-day meeting is intended to prepare the 11th Extraordinary Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU), on 17th – 18th November 2018.
The meeting considers proposals on the reform of the structure and portfolio of the senior leadership of the AU Commission.
Focus includes selection of the senior leadership of the Commission, administrative and financial reforms, and the mandate of the AU Development Agency (AUDA) in line with Assembly decision Assembly/AU/Dec.691(XXXI).
Still, the participants were expected to consider division of labour between the AU, RECs, continental organisations and Member States, strengthening of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), Financing of the Union, and AU Peace Fund.
Furthermore, the meeting would brief on the Report of the Chairperson of the Executive Council to the Assembly on the Outcome of the 19th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council on the ACP Post 2020, and prepare draft decisions, draft agenda and draft work programme of the 11th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly.
