Healing Emotions to fight Addiction - OMICS Group Medical Conferences
2nd International Conference and Exhibition on Addiction Research & Therapy which is going to be held during July 22-24, 2013 at Embassy Suites Las Vegas, USA.
LOS ANGELES, CA, USA, July 23, 2013 /EINPresswire.com/ -- According to Dictionary, addiction is a state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to do something that is psychologically or physically a habit of repeating it to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.Addiction is a state of mind or behavior that perpetuates the individual to stick to it irrespective of consequences. It is a psychological, neurological and behavioral disorder that demands among other things a constant medication, patience, counseling and behavioral therapy. Addiction includes anything starting from devastating drugs, smoking, alcoholism and sex to coffee/tea, soft drink, junk food and online games.
According to National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), addiction to tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs is leading to $193 billion, $235 billion and $193 billion respectively, leading to an aggregated spending of over $600 billion in US alone.
Realizing the gravity of the situation and overwhelmed by the response to its 1st International conference on Addiction Therapy, OMICS Group2 geared up to conduct 2nd International conference on Addiction Research & Therapy during 22-24 July, 2013 at Embassy Suites Las Vegas, USA. Addiction Therapy-2013 conference has been appreciated with a huge gathering from more than 30 countries.
Key Speakers:
Kenneth Blum, University of Florida, USA delivered his speech on Reward Deficiency Solution System™ (RDSS): Changing the landscape of treatment and relapse prevention for all addictions utilizing evidence- based research in humans and animal models. He discussed how his research study reevaluated the potential association of dopamine D2 receptor gene (DRD2), dopamine D1 receptor gene (DRD1), dopamine transporter gene (DAT1) and dopamine beta-hydroxylase gene (DBH) polymorphisms in Reward Deficiency.
Kirk J. Brower of the University of Michigan Addiction Research Center, USA delivered his research talk on “Treating insomnia in alcohol-dependent patients”.
He explained how Insomnia is a common, persistent and associated syndrome with relapse and suicidality in alcohol-dependent patients. His paper says that in majority cases, insomnia may precede the development of alcohol dependence; and childhood sleep problems and predicted early-onset drinking in boys. This talk reviewed the normal sleep and its measurement, followed by what is regarded as the prevalence, correlates, and persistence of insomnia in alcohol- addicted boys.
Creating hope: The key to effective addiction treatment was the talk delivered by the Constance Scharff, Cliffside Malibu, USA.
This paper emphasizes that hope is far more important element in the addiction treatment rather than death and dismissed the myth of powerlessness, disease, and the terrible odds any individual addict faces in achieving long-term sobriety. We dwell on death far more than on hope –yet hope is perhaps the most critical element.
The paper further dwelt at length on factors that could instill hope in addicted people. The paper rules out vulnerability, shame, as dismaying factors and suggests the ways and means on how to promote hope among the addicted persons.
The paper demonstrated how storytelling techniques of psychotherapy and self-help groups -be used to build feelings of hope, belief in the "impossible," and desire for recovery and a transformed life in addicts? Is there a role for psychotherapists and other healing professionals to play in developing hope among addicts.
Philip K. Liu, Mass General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, USA talked about
Gene modulation by transcription factor proteins and micro RNA in living brains after Amphetamine
This presentation explored Magnetic Resonance (MR) visible probes to target image intracellular gene transcription activator proteins that are induced by drugs of addiction. Drug addiction is a major health problem that severely hampers the productivity of many members of our society. While studies indicate that drug addiction results from combined influences of genes and environment, recent studies suggest that epigenetic modifications of gene transcription factors may play an important role in the development of addictions in humans. Advances in cellular and molecular biology in the past century have led to identification of novel gene markers, the signaling pathways they influence and gene activities they regulate. With biopsy the only source of tissue for conventional assays, such studies are not permitted in humans.
The three day conference dwelt on various important and interesting issues related to addiction therapy.
