On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of the European Union as you celebrate Europe Day this May 9th. Sixty-two years ago, Robert Schuman declared that a united Europe is indispensable to the advancement of world peace. Since then, Europe has emerged from a continent torn by war and discord into a union of countries and ideals dedicated to building a more secure, democratic, and prosperous world.

Since we marked Europe Day last year, upheavals and democratic reforms have taken place throughout North Africa and the Middle East. Old regimes have crumbled and new democracies continue to emerge. Through it all, the bonds between the European Union and the United States have strengthened as we work to promote the tenets of freedom and democracy. Our common values and shared interests for a more peaceful world are anchored in the rich history of our transatlantic partnership.

I am grateful for the vital role the EU plays around the world. From its leadership on bringing peace to the Middle East to its support for dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, to its commitment to isolating oppressive regimes and its support of the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, the EU continues to help solve global problems. As you pause to celebrate Europe Day, know that the United States stands with you as a partner and friend. Together, we will continue to work towards building a better and brighter future for all our people.
