When Should You Text Instead of Call?

Calling 911 is still the fastest and most reliable way to get help. However, texting can be life-saving in specific scenarios, such as:

• A domestic violence situation where speaking could put someone at greater risk

• A medical emergency that makes it difficult or impossible to speak

• Hearing or speech impairments that prevent voice communication

Text-to-911 gives residents an option when their voice can’t be used, without delaying their access to help.

How to Text 911 in an Emergency

Texting 911 is simple, but it’s important to follow these guidelines to make sure your message is received and understood:

1. Open your phone’s built-in text messaging app (not a third-party or downloaded messaging app).

3. Keep your message short and clear. In the message body, type what the emergency is and your exact location.
