SWEDEN, September 19 - Published
On 21–27 September, the 80th session of the UN General Assembly is being commemorated in New York. In conjunction with the session, a high-level debate and several high-level meetings will convene. His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen will participate during the high-level week. The Government will be represented by Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard, Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari and Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health Jakob Forssmed.
UN will mark the 80th anniversary of its establishment in a meeting in the General Assembly Hall.
During the high-level week, Sweden will raise issues such as maintaining strong global support for Ukraine and defending the rules-based international order. This year, Sweden holds the Presidency of the UN Women Executive Board and a major focus will be on gender equality, as it is a core value of Swedish foreign policy and a priority area for Sweden’s work at the UN.
During the high-level week, a number of summits will be held on themes such as climate change, gender equality, non-communicable diseases, mental health, screen time and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). Ms Malmer Stenergard will chair the CTBT meeting together with the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines.
Mr Forssmed will participate in a roundtable discussion organised by the Clinton Global Initiative on mental health and online safety for young people. Ms Pourmokhtari’s programme will focus primarily on preparations ahead of COP30 in Belém, her participation in the Climate Summit and her keynote address at a Leadership Group for Industry Transition (LeadIT) event.
The Ministers will be available for interviews. Contact their press secretaries for more information.
