MDC reminds hunters to prepare for the upcoming dove season

Body

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reminds hunters to prepare for dove season, which begins Sept. 1 and continues until Nov. 29.

“With ample public hunting areas, managed fields, and solid bird populations, dove season offers some of the most accessible and exciting wing-shooting action of the year,” said MDC Protection Regional Supervisor Russell Duckworth. “It’s fast-paced, social, and a perfect opportunity to introduce new hunters to the outdoors. Whether you’re hunting with family, friends, or a youth group, it’s one of the most enjoyable seasons we offer.”

Daily limits for mourning doves and white-winged doves combined are 15 birds, with a possession limit of 45.

Know Before You Go

Hunters are reminded that:

  • A small game hunting permit is required for residents ages 16 – 64.
  • Migratory Bird Hunting Permit is also required for dove hunters age 16 and older.
  • Non-toxic shot is required on many conservation areas — check area regulations before hunting.
  • Shooting hours for dove are from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset.

Safety and Stewardship

Dove hunting often involves multiple groups hunting in the same field, so safety and courtesy are critical.

“Always be aware of your surroundings and maintain a safe zone of fire,” said Duckworth. “Respect other hunters, pick up spent shells, and leave the field better than you found it. Ethical hunting helps ensure a positive experience for everyone.”
