When Californians resoundingly approved a 2020 initiative sponsored by Uber and Lyft to reclassify their 1.4 million drivers in the state as contractors rather than employees, little attention was paid to the measure’s elimination of workers’ compensation coverage for a driver’s on-the-job injuries and illnesses.
