Readout of ASD Wallander’s Participation in the 43rd U.S.-Jordan Joint Military Commission

Pentagon Spokesperson Lt Col Phil Ventura provided the following readout:

Senior delegations from the United States and Jordan met May 8-9 in Amman, Jordan for the 43rd meeting of the U.S.-Jordan Joint Military Commission (JMC).  The Jordanian delegation was led by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Major General Yousef Hnaity, who hosted the event.  The U.S. delegation was led by Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander. The JMC is the premier bilateral forum for senior U.S. and Jordanian government and military officials to discuss shared and mutually beneficial defense priorities.

U.S. and Jordanian officials reiterated their commitment to further advance their robust security partnership, which is a pillar of regional stability.  The delegations discussed a broad range of issues that reflect mutual priority and focus:  Iran’s destabilizing regional activities, the status of the Global Coalition to defeat ISIS, border security, and regional efforts to deescalate tensions. The delegations discussed the deepening military cooperation between Iran and Russia and the negative implications of this cooperation for the region.  The U.S. delegation also praised Jordan’s diplomatic efforts in furtherance of a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The U.S. delegation reaffirmed its commitment to deepening economic and military cooperation between the countries, underpinned by the seven-year, $10.15 billion U.S.-Jordan Memorandum of Understanding. The U.S. delegation praised the professionalism of the Jordanian Armed Forces and expressed deep appreciation for U.S.-Jordan military cooperation, as well as Jordan’s contributions to regional security, in particular efforts to facilitate integrated maritime, air, and missile defense cooperation with allies and partners.
