Carlsbad, CA — Police officers are calling an accident that injured as many as six children at a carnival on National Parks Highway in south Carlsbad a “freak accident.” A carnival ride broke at 10:45 p.m., on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at the site of Moore’s Greater Shows, sponsored by the Carlsbad Heights Lions Club, reported the Carlsbad Current-Argus.

The Carlsbad Police Department reported that a bolt holding a support in place broke, which cause the track to slide and the car to fall. The ride car was holding between six and 10 children at the time.

The carnival ride was described as a small, dragon-shaped roller coaster that is intended for young children.

The victims, who are between the ages of 6 and 8-years-old, were thrown forward before being jarred by the abrupt stop when the bolt failed. The injuries were not considered serious. All of the children left the carnival with their parents. Responding emergency crews treated two victims for minor injuries at the scene.

Accident reports indicated that the ride lap bars were in the proper place on the children, which acted as safety devices to keep them in the ride car.

No citations have been issued at this time in connection with the accident.

Investigations are ongoing.
