Canada to OK Good Health Label on Quaker Oats; Former Head of Agency Says It's A Mistake

EINNEWS, November 23---Quaker Oats sold in Canada will soon carry a good health label on its familiar boxes, touting the relationship between oat fibers and cholesterol. Health Canada approved the designation Monday.

But today the former head of Health Canada's nutritional sciences bureau said there is no evidence to support the claim.

Mary L'Abbe, the former director, told the Montreal Gazette that she is disappointed the claim was approved. The evidence to support such a claim has not been posted---only a summary document, she said. With such scant information it's not possible for researchers to know whether the claim is valid, she said.

L'Abbe left Health Canada in 2007 after 31 years.

Quaker Oats is a product of PepsiCo Canada.
