On Sunday, September 19th, a day before the UN Special Session on the MDGs began, approximately 340 attendees, including UN member country delegates, First Ladies, NGOs, corporations, donors, UN agencies, youth leaders and media gathered in New York City to discuss progress made on the MDGs and concrete steps to be taken. The report from this event, “Accelerating Action on the MDGs ”, the first official side event of the MDG Summit, is now available on the Women Deliver website. The report includes solutions shared during moderated table discussions.

At the brunch event, Dr. Fred Sai, the honorary co-chair of the Women Deliver 2010 conference, said, “We ask delegates to allocate at least 30 seconds of their five minute speeches at the UN to focus on your commitment to women.” The UN summit week illustrated exciting progress for those working in the maternal health field. Out of the 70 countries that spoke at the Monday and Tuesday morning plenaries, over half of the countries explicitly mentioned maternal health and women’s empowerment. Three international agencies emphasized the need to bolster commitments and resources for investing in women and girls, and the UN Secretary-General’s launch of the Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health marked a pivotal repositioning of maternal health to the forefront of the global development agenda.
