New York company fined for asbestos-handling violation at a church
W.L. Thomas Environmental, an Albany, New York based business, was fined $8,400 by the Department of Environmental Quality for an asbestos-related violation at a church located in Salem.
In July, the company removed approximately 850 square feet of asbestos vinyl floor tiles from the basement at First Baptist Church. The basis of the DEQ violation is that workers did not adequately saturate the tiles during removal, which is intended to reduce the amount of asbestos fibers released into the air.
Asbestos is a highly dangerous air contaminant that has been proven to cause mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that currently has no known cure.
W.L. Thomas Environmental has appealed the violation.
