New novel follows two young men as they struggle in the Gold Rush and hunt whales in Pacific

TREASURES: Gold, Oil and Wives by M. "Cal" Calvache portrays a story of danger and excitement on the search for fortune

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (MMD Newswire) September 8, 2010 -- Treasures: Gold, Oil and Wives by M. "Cal" Calvache offers a fact-based, historical novel following two adventurers whose quest for fortune leads them from hostile American Indian encounters during the California Gold Rush to dangerous confrontations with whales.

"The novel is based on the true stories of ambitious young men who sought secure futures in an era when rewards came from individual effort and strength of character," Calvache says. "Their success resulted from a willingness to work hard and take risks."

Thomas Chatfield from Cornwall, N.Y., and Bethuel Handy from Cotuit, Mass., search for fortune and along the way marry each other's sisters. Inspired by the author's research on historical events of the era, the novel follows the two men as they face American Indian attacks and vigilante justice in the Gold Rush mining camps after which they struggle with angry prey and threatening weather as whale ship captains. The book recounts how 28-year-old Chatfield rescues Handy from a harrowing shipwreck on the Siberian coast and then retires a wealthy man while Handy returns to his whaling career.

Calvache's factual tale is based on stories passed down by five generations, and a preserved 1860 San Francisco newspaper that documents Handy's shipwreck. The author's interest in family history led him to write the novel that recounts the adventures of his ancestors, both members of the famous Nickerson family of Cape Cod, Mass.

TREASURES: Gold, Oil and Wives is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
