Oregon Mesothelioma Report: Oregon’s first woman mayor dies of mesothelioma

08/19/2010 // Corvallis, Oregon, USA // Mesothelioma News Now! // Oregon Mesothelioma Reporter

Helen Berg, the first female mayor of Corvallis, Oregon, recently lost her battle to asbestos-related mesothelioma, according to the Gazette-Times.

Berg, 78, stood as Corvallis’ longest-serving mayor, having retired in 2006 after twelve years in office. She was "magnanimous and generous with her public life - but was intensely private about her family and personal life," city manager Jon Nelson said.

Upon retiring, Berg did not disclose whether or not the state of her health played a factor in her decision. Berg relocated to Portland to be closer to her family after she retired, according to a news source.

Mesothelioma is the most rare form of asbestos-related cancers, affecting the membrane lining that covers the body's internal organs. Medical reports show approximately 107,000 people die every year from asbestos-related diseases.
