It's British Sandwich Week 2010
British Sandwich Week launches May 9-15, 2010, to celebrate that great British food invention and global export, the sandwich.
PRESS DISPENSARY - Tuesday, Apr 13, 2010 - Next month sees the launch of British Sandwich Week 2010 (May 9-15) - an occasion designed to recognise the importance of one of Britain's greatest food inventions.
And it's not just we British who are discovering how well this gastronomic creation fits today's busy lifestyles - its popularity is spreading across the world, from the United States to Japan. Even those haughty French, who so often deride British cuisine, are having to eat their words as the sandwich is taking the streets of Paris by storm. They now even have dedicated exhibition for sandwiches in the city!
Never, since 1762 when the fourth Earl of Sandwich first dubbed two slices of bread with a filling as 'a sandwich', has this great British food been so popular - and British Sandwich Week gives us all an opportunity to shout about it.
Throughout British Sandwich Week 2010, retailers and caterers across the UK will be celebrating the occasion in their own way with promotions and new product launches.
At the same time, The British Sandwich Association - the trade body for the industry - will be publishing a report on this massive UK market which employs more than 300,000 people; the results of the annual British Sandwich Industry Awards - known as The Sammies - will also be announced (Thursday May 13); and to cap it all, Britain's leading sandwich designers (yes, the industry employs specialists to design new sandwiches) will be travelling from across the UK to London to compete for the title 'British Sandwich Designer of the Year'.
If publications, journalists and editors would like to join us in celebrating this Great British Occasion, we can help with information, pictures, contacts for interviews and even some prizes for competitions. Furthermore you may well find that sandwich retail outlets in your area are keen to support anything you plan to do.
