Jemez Pueblo First Native American Tribe to Use Reservation for Solar Energy Generation
January 18, 2010 /EIN PRESSWIRE/ Seeking much-needed revenue, the Jemez Pueblo tribe of New Mexico is nearing a deal to use its land for solar energy production. They would be the first Native American tribe to engage in such a venture.
Thirty acres of the tribe's land will be used to house almost 15,000 solar panels, which could generate $1 million a year for the tribe. The plant produces enough electricity to power about 600 homes.
This could be a big first step for Native American tribes to tap into the millions being spent on green energy production. Tribes in the U.S. control more than 55 million acres of land.
