Foreign Minister Schallenberg welcomes his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias

AUSTRIA, March 7 - On 8 March 2022, Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg welcomed Nikos Dendias, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic, to Vienna. Both Ministers strongly condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine and reiterated their support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

I am happy to see the West – both the EU and countries far beyond the EU – truly presenting a united front in these times of crisis. I have never before experienced such a feeling of agreement and solidarity within the EU,

commented Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg.

Aside from the latest developments in Ukraine, the meeting between the two Ministers focussed on the shared responsibility of both countries in the Western Balkans and efforts for EU enlargement in this region.

If the Ukraine crisis has shown us one thing, it is that we should not wait any longer. We need to invite the countries closest to us, those surrounded by EU Member States, to become members of the European family,

emphasised Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, who also expressed his sympathy for losses among the Greek minority in Ukraine, especially in the particularly hard-hit area of Mariupol, to his Greek counterpart. Foreign Minister Schallenberg and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dendias were particularly clear in their demands to establish humanitarian corridors.

The senseless suffering and senseless destruction must come to an end. Civilians must be able to leave their cities safely and humanitarian aid must reach cities as a matter of urgency. Austria has already provided EUR 17.5 million in immediate humanitarian aid and we will, of course, offer protection to anyone fleeing Ukraine,

Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg stated, confirming the official position of the Austrian government.

The situation in the eastern Mediterranean was also discussed by the two Ministers. The Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked Austria for its support in the 2015 refugee crisis, during which, as Dendias stated, Austria proved itself to be a true friend even in difficult times.
