San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi today announced that the Department of Transportation has allocated $250 million in fiscal year 2020 Capital Investment Grant funds to the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) Core Capacity project.  BART currently has the capacity to operate a maximum of 24 trains per hour in each direction through the existing Transbay Tube between San Francisco and Oakland.  The Transbay Corridor Core Capacity Program will allow BART to operate up to 30 ten-car trains per hour in each direction through the existing tube, maximizing throughput in the most heavily used part of its system.

“Today, San Franciscans can celebrate having secured a robust $250 million to move our city and our country forward,” said Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  “This strong investment is vital progress for the millions of San Franciscans who rely on BART each day, including many essential frontline workers, as it furthers the $2.7 billion-dollar Core Capacity initiative to decrease commute times while increasing safety and capacity.”

“This grant, which upholds the federal funding commitment for this critical initiative, follows the allocation secured by the California delegation in Congress of $87 million to support the local share of the project as part of the American Rescue Plan,” continued Speaker Pelosi.  “And, fittingly, this announcement comes just after President Biden unveiled his American Jobs Plan: a visionary, once-in-a-century investment in the American people and in America’s future.  Congressional Democrats look forward to partnering with the Biden-Harris Administration to enact these key investments that create good-paying union jobs, invest in American workers and reimagine and revitalize our infrastructure in a transformative, resilient way.  We must ensure that the Bay Area continues to be an engine of innovation and center of economic dynamism in the country and around the world.”
