I'm so grateful to VetStem for their help and that they have his cells in storage so we can give him more injections in the future if needed!!”

POWAY, CALIFORNIA, US, October 13, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Kirby is a seven-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi who has been competing in agility since he was just a year and a half. When he was approximately four years old, he began experiencing intermittent lameness in his hips and left knee. His veterinarian at the time treated him with cold laser therapy, underwater treadmill, and a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory. While this combination of treatments would help for a while, he still experienced lameness.

Next, Kirby received platelet therapy. Platelet therapy can aid in healing damaged joint tissues, however most pets generally do not experience long term results when being treated for chronic, degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. Kirby did great for approximately one year after receiving platelet therapy, but eventually his symptoms returned. At that point, Kirby’s mom elected to pursue treatment with VetStem Cell Therapy.

To begin the process, Kirby’s veterinarian, Dr. Kim Dembinski of Paradise Veterinary Hospital, collected fat tissue from Kirby’s abdomen during a minimally invasive anesthetic procedure. According to Kirby’s mom, “The minor surgery to harvest the fat was easy and he recovered quickly.” Once collected, the fat was aseptically packaged and shipped to the VetStem laboratory in Poway, California. VetStem lab technicians received and processed the fat to extract and concentrate Kirby’s stem and regenerative cells. Five stem cell injections were shipped back to Dr. Dembinski and Kirby received one injection into each hip, each knee, and also intravenously.

Approximately two months after treatment with VetStem Cell Therapy, Kirby was doing much better. According to his mom, he was able to return to agility, competing about once a month with an 80% qualifying rate. In addition, he hikes 12-15 miles with his mom each week. She stated, “I'm so grateful to VetStem for their help and that they have his cells in storage so we can give him more injections in the future if needed!!”

Like Kirby, many dogs suffer from pain associated with osteoarthritis, which can greatly affect their quality of life. According to surveys answered by owners and veterinarians, greater than 80% of dogs showed an improved quality of life after receiving VetStem Cell Therapy for orthopedic conditions. Stem cells are regenerative cells that can differentiate into many tissue types, reduce pain and inflammation, help to restore range of motion, and stimulate regeneration of tendon, ligament and joint tissues. In a peer-reviewed study of dogs with chronic osteoarthritis of the hip, it was found that stem cells reduced lameness and pain.
